Emotion-triggered Learning for Autonomous Robots

The fact that emotions are considered to be essential to human reasoning suggests that they might play an important role in autonomous robots. Experimental work was done in a simulated robot that adapts to its environment through the use of reinforcement learning. Results suggest that emotions can be useful in detecting the relevant events of a learning task.

A Q-learning Based Continuous Tuning of Fuzzy Wall Tracking

A simple easy to implement algorithm is proposed to address wall tracking task of an autonomous robot. The robot should navigate in unknown environments, find the nearest wall, and track it solely based on locally sensed data. The proposed method benefits from coupling fuzzy logic and Q-learning to meet requirements of autonomous navigations. Fuzzy if-then rules provide a reliable decision maki...

Emotion-Based Learning of Intrinsically Motivated Autonomous Agents living in a Social World

This paper presents the performance of autonomous agents living in a role-playing game, where social interaction is allowed. These agents are controlled by an emotion-based architecture where the control architecture has a motivational model, which performs homeostatic control of the internal state of the agent. The agents learn the behaviour selection using reinforcement learning algorithms wh...

Guest editorial: Special issue on robot learning, Part A

Creating autonomous robots that can assist humans in unpredictable situations of daily life has been a long standing vision of robotics, artificial intelligence, and the cognitive sciences. With the current rise of physical humanoid and other highly mechanically capable robots in robotics research labs around the globe, we have come a step closer to this aim. Thus, it has become essential to cr...

Robot-Assisted Therapy for Learning and Social Interaction of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

This paper puts forward the potential for designing a parrot-inspired robot and an indirect teaching technique, the adapted model-rival method (AMRM), to help improve learning and social interaction abilities of children with autism spectrum disorder. The AMRM was formulated by adapting two popular conventional approaches, namely, model-rival method and label-training procedure. In our validati...
